SEOUL, Nov. 21 (Yonhap) — The top naval officers of South Korea and the Philippines held talks Tuesday to discuss military and defense industry cooperation, the South’s Navy said.

Adm. Yang Yong-mo, chief of naval operations, met his Philippine counterpart, Vice Adm. Toribio Dulinayan Adaci Jr., at South Korea’s Naval Academy in Changwon, 298 kilometers southeast of Seoul, according to the Navy.

During the talks, Yang called the Philippines a “key partner” in South Korea’s Indo-Pacific strategy and pledged to offer maintenance and logistics support for its warships, which include corvettes donated by South Korea and frigates built by South Korean shipyards.

Adaci, who is currently visiting the country at the invitation of the South’s Navy, also toured the Submarine Force Command in Changwon on Tuesday, and held talks on security and arms industry cooperation, the Navy said.

Manila is known to be seeking to acquire advanced military equipment, which may possibly include submarines, as part of its military’s modernization efforts.
