YG Entertainment, the agency that has been managing K-pop girl band BLACKPINK ever since their inception, has announced that all four members of the group have renewed their contracts. This comes as a huge relief for fans of the girl band as rumours of their disbandment have been rife for the last few months. Additionally, the contract has been renewed months after it was explored.

YG Entertainment said in a statement, “We are pleased to announce that our board of directors has successfully come to an agreement on the signing of exclusive group contracts for all four members of BLACKPINK, our talented artists. BLACKPINK will continue to do its best to shine more brightly in the world music market as an artist representing K-POP, and we will continue to give their unwavering support and faith in their actions.”

This news comes weeks after several online news agencies cited industry insiders that the BLACKPINK members were looking at pursuing their solo careers. “Some agencies are extending offers with down payments in the tens of billions of won to attract them. Nevertheless, certain members feel that partnering with YG, the entity that has backed BLACKPINK’s endeavours thus far, is a more effective approach, and they are currently in ongoing discussions with YG,” a report suggested.

BLACKPINK consists of members Jisoo, Jennie, Rosé, and Lisa and is dubbed as the “biggest girl group in the world.” Musically, they are known for popularizing the “girl crush” concept, exploring themes of self-confidence and female empowerment. The band debuted in August 2016 with their single album Square One, which featured “Whistle” and “Boombayah”, their first number-one entries on South Korea’s Gaon Digital Chart and the US Billboard World Digital Song Sales chart, respectively. It was followed in November by the single album Square Two, whose song “Playing with Fire” was the first by a Korean girl group to enter the Billboard Canadian Hot 100. Blackpink have broken numerous records throughout their career; their Born Pink World Tour (2022–23) became the highest-grossing concert tour by a female group, and they were the first Asian act to headline Coachella.
