Residents across Greater Victoria and the western portion of Vancouver Island should prepare for intensified winds this weekend as Environment Canada escalates its warning levels for potentially hazardous weather conditions.

Saturday morning saw the weather agency heightening its alert status, shifting from a prior special weather statement issued on Friday.

The impending winds are slated to commence Saturday night, persisting through Sunday morning.

Anticipated wind gusts range from 70 to 90 km/h across Greater Victoria.

Similarly, west Vancouver Island, especially exposed coastal communities such as Sooke, Jordan River, Port Renfrew, Ucluelet, and Tofino, should prepare for winds ranging between 80 to 100 km/h.

With these forceful gusts, Environment Canada cautions about potential power outages, tree branches snapping, and loose objects being carried by the wind.

Expect a gradual decrease in wind intensity by late Sunday morning.

Those planning to travel BC Ferries over the next 24 hours should check for conditions before heading out.
