On November 21, Buckingham Palace hosted the Korean State Banquet to honour President Yoon Suk Yeol and his wife Kim Keon Hee during their second state visit under King Charles III.

The event marked a historic blend of entertainment and diplomacy as the globally acclaimed K-Pop sensation, Blackpink, made a memorable appearance, bridging pop culture and royalty. Not only did Blackpink showcase their signature style, but they also received a personal message from King Charles himself.

Key highlights of the Korean state banquet

  • King Charles III and Queen Camilla graciously hosted the event, honoring President Yoon Suk Yeol and his spouse during their second state visit on November 21.
  • The formal affair featured a white tie and tiara dress code, with Queen Camilla donning the Burmese Ruby Tiara and Crown Ruby Necklace, previously belonging to the late Queen Elizabeth II.

Notable guests included the Princess of Wales and the Duchess of Gloucester, both adorning the revered Strathmore Rose Tiara from the Queen Mother’s collection, making a notable return after almost a century.

Renowned as fashion icons, Blackpink members— Jisoo, Jennie, Rosé, and Lisa captivated attention with their impeccable fashion sense, each donning elegant gowns:

  • Jisoo wore a black dress with puff sleeves and carried a “CD” imprinted black leather bag, highlighting her role as a Dior brand ambassador.
  • Jennie chose a crisp white gown with off-the-shoulder, long sleeves.
  • Rosé went for a black velvet dress with a sweetheart neckline, paired with a black ribbon bow in her hair.
  • Lisa embraced a more elaborate style in an embellished blue gown with a cape train.

Blackpink’s presence at Buckingham Palace marked a momentous occasion for the genre, as it continues to gain recognition on the world stage.

King Charles’ commendation

  • During the state banquet, King Charles took a moment to address the members of Blackpink.

In a heartfelt speech, he said:

“I applaud Jennie, Jisoo, Lisa and Rose, better known collectively as Blackpink, for their role in bringing the message of environmental sustainability to a global audience as ambassadors for the UK’s presidency of Cop26, and later as advocates for the UN sustainable development goals.”

He also expressed his admiration for Blackpink’s ability to prioritize important issues while simultaneously being global superstars.

Adding a touch of humour, he mentioned his involvement in the development of “Gangnam Style” during his time in Seoul—an expression referring to the extravagant lifestyles linked to Seoul’s Gangnam area.

Touched by the royal acknowledgment, despite being seated separately, the Blackpink members exchanged glances, sharing smiles and gratitude.
